Mass media influence

Mass Media Influence

In the last 50 years the media influence has grown exponentially with the advance of technology, first there was the telegraph, then the radio, the newspaper, magazines, television and now the internet.
We live in a society that depends on information and communication to keep moving in the right direction and do our daily activities like work, entertainment, health care, education, personal relationships, traveling and anything else that we have to do.
A common person in the city usually wakes up checks the tv news or newspaper, goes to work, makes a few phone calls, eats with their family when possible and makes his decisions based on the information that he has either from their co workers, news, tv, friends, family, financial reports, etc.
What we need to be aware is that most of our decisions, beliefs and values are based on what we know for a fact, our assumptions and our own experience. In our work we usually know what we have to do based on our experience and studies, however on our daily lives we rely on the media to get the current news and facts about what is important and what we should be aware of.
We have put our trust on the media as an authority to give us news, entertainment and education. However, the influence of mass media on our kids, teenagers and society is so big that we should know how it really works.

Below are some interesting advertisements that i came across...its a pleasure to see the intricate designing....

Media Explosion in India.

A hi-tech revolution has been manifested through an information explosion that is slowly encompassing all parts of the country. This revolution may be taking shape within the avant- garde, air conditioned offices of informatimation technology and media barons.but its spirit is strongly egalitarian and affects consumers with an increasing barrage of information filtering in through various media across the nation.

The last few decades have seen the emergence of two more significant developments in the print media industry, viz. the transmission of newspaper pages by fax and the inaugration of photocomposing. The use of high speed modems, fibreoptic cables and satellite links has,in fact, facilitated the transmission of entire newspaper pages across continents in a matter of minutes.

Nothing has changed the face of the print media in India more than the personal computer which enables publication of any material from the desktop.this has not only fascilitated the publication of a lot new material.but also empowered the independent publisher who can now compete with large conglomerates by simply publishing small booklets or magazines without worrying about costs and the necessity of  large-scale circulation.

Camera electronics is growing much beyond merely  helping the photojournalist with exposure and focusing.Digital cameras, which are widely used by later, carry pictures to the newsroom in a matter of seconds over broadband and hi-fi transfer cables. Among the other modern tools that have revolutionsied print journalism in India are word processors that fascilitat the intersection of files and any archival material in the reportage; electronic data transfer, which enable a reporeter to achieve transmission speeds of over 70,000 words per minitue across telephone lines and other media sources.

Meanwhile, there has also occured a spurt in radio channels. With a number of firms reportedly offering millions in bank gurantees for 37 licenses awarded to private firms to run FM radio stations, private broadcasting has become a full scale reality in India since Independence.

But this information explosion has also brought with it a massive multi-pronged tool for promoting consumerism.Almost unregulated as it is,the advertising on slaught is undoubtedly much larger than the impact the media explosion has had on the society.

  • Public Service Advertising: These centre on a social cause. The pulse polio campaign is a n ideal example.Sometimes companies come up with such ads as an indication of corporate social responsibility.Non-Government Organisation (NGO's) may also issue advertising for their respective causes, appealing to the caonscience of the reader and provoke action.eg.Polio Advertisements.
  • Teaser Advertising: Generates curiosity. The Digen Verma campaign for Frooti is a classic example of a teaser campaign.eg.Frooti

  • Direct Response Advertising: Direct response advertising is the business of designing, writing and placing advertisements that ask the reader(the target audience)to respond by calling a phone number, sending a business reply card,or visiting a website for more information. This form of communication relies on action from the end-consumer's side.
  • Celebrity Advertising

Although the audience is getting smarter and smarter and the modern day consumer getting immune to the exaggerated claims made in a majority of advertisements, there exist a section of advertisers that still bank upon celebrities and their popularity for advertising their products. Using celebrities for advertising involves signing up celebrities for advertising campaigns, which consist of all sorts of advertising including, television ads or even print advertisements.

  • Broadcast advertising – Television, Radio and the Internet

Broadcast advertising is a very popular advertising medium that constitutes of several branches like television, radio or the Internet. Television advertisements have been very popular ever since they have been introduced. The cost of television advertising often depends on the duration of the advertisement, the time of broadcast (prime time/peak time), and of course the popularity of the television channel on which the advertisement is going to be broadcasted. The radio might have lost its charm owing to the new age media however the radio remains to be the choice of small-scale advertisers. The radio jingles have been very popular advertising media and have a large impact on the audience, which is evident in the fact that many people still remember and enjoy the popular radio jingles.

Types of Advertising

How many of us really know the various types of Advertising???
Well I certainly didn't! but a little bit of research on Google did help, again that involved a lot of effort which we youngsters at some times hate to take...So I am listing down a list for all those students who need that extra bit of knowledge on Types of Advertising!!Go on ...Read it...It surely will help

                                          TYPES OF ADVERTISING

    • Brand Advertising: The most common type of advertising,it is also known as consumer advertising. It involves advertising for fast-moving consumer goods(FMCG),such as soft drinks, instant noodles, chocolate bars, etc;durables, like electronic goods, furniture, etc as well as some service brands(insurance, medical services, etc). The main aim of such advertising is to build long term brand identity and image.eg Cadbury Dairy milk Eclairs.

  • Retail Advertising:This kind of advertising is local in nature. It focuses on the store where a variety of products are on offer or a service can be availed. The local newspaper and cable channels are the most common media for retail advertising.E.g.Big Bazzar.
  • Political Advertising:As the term suggests, this type of advertising is reorted to by politicians during an election campaign. It has come under a lot of flak, primarily because these tend to focus on image rather than issues and hence tends to be negative in nature.e.g.Obama's campaigning in the U.S.A
  • Print Advertising – Newspapers, Magazines, Brochures, Fliers
The print media have always been a popular advertising medium. Advertising products via newspapers or magazines is a common practice. In addition to this, the print media also offers options like promotional brochures and fliers for advertising purposes. Often the newspapers and the magazines sell the advertising space according to the area occupied by the advertisement, the position of the advertisement (front page/middle page), as well as the readership of the publications. For instance an advertisement in a relatively new and less popular newspaper would cost far less than placing an advertisement in a popular newspaper with a high readership.
  • Broadcast advertising – Television, Radio and the Internet

Television advertisements have been very popular ever since they have been introduced.
